Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
