The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
