The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Season on BBC
The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived this week.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.
The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
