Nicolas Sarkozy Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Detailing Three Weeks In Custody

The ex-president of France plans a memoir in the coming weeks titled Notes from a Cell, detailing the period served in custody.

The announcement emerged just 11 days following the ex-leader was released as he contests the court ruling related to illegal collaboration regarding a scheme to acquire political financing provided by the government of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he reflects in one passage, indicating the memoir will focus on his musings during solitary confinement as opposed to wider commentary regarding the packed and troubled correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which is missing in La Santé, where one hears endless commotion,” he adds. “The racket unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world is fortified while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Describing the Ordeal

While appealing for release, he was present via screen from a room in prison, describing his time inside as draining. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this ordeal manageable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It affects one all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

He, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, was the first ex-leader in the European Union and the first postwar leader of France to serve time in prison.

Ahead of his incarceration he had said he would use his time to write a book.

Books in Prison

Unconfirmed is whether he had time to read and critique the three books he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, where a wrongfully accused individual ends up incarcerated but escapes to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

The former leader remained in isolation to protect him in a space of about nine sq metres featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in the city. Security personnel were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted just yogurt during his stay due to concerns prison cuisine may have been contaminated. He had facilities for self-catering but he turned this down, as per accounts. Unclear remains if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client each day throughout the jail term, stated during proceedings his safety would improve outside jail rather than in custody. “He has faced threats against his life, listened to yells at night plus rapid actions next door when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison last month when a French court sentenced him to a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy related to a plan to obtain political donations for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and another court case set for next spring.
