After enduring torrential rains that caused flooding across areas in the city, LA is now confronting unseasonably warm conditions for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the mercury soared to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by weather officials. This exceeds the previous daily record for this date, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was established in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were labeled on NWS graphics for the region.
Public Health Alerts
Forecasters stated that Friday's conditions posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their guidance included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave kids or animals unattended in a hot car.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sudden spike in heat arrives just after a powerful winter storm that struck the state recently. That storm brought thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, causing mudslide risks for many residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
Looking ahead a cooldown will arrive. The heat were predicted to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by late Friday.
Other locales that hit the 90-degree mark were Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Additionally, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to experience the upper eighties.
In the coming days, downtown Los Angeles can expect readings in the eighties, with cooler weather expected for the week ahead.
