Former British Soldier Charged of Murdering Kenya Woman Appears in Courtroom

A man has been presented in court as extradition proceedings started in the case of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan national, a female from Kenya who was killed near a British forces camp in 2012.

Robert Purkiss, thirty-eight, who is hailing from the Manchester area, appeared before the Westminster court on Friday, and stated to the court he planned to fight the deportation. Sources suggest that he was arrested on Thursday evening.

A detention order for the defendant was issued by a Nairobi court in September. Legal prosecutors told the Kenyan court that the accused had been facing a sole charge, of homicide, and that the Kenyan authorities would pursue his extradition to answer to accusations.

The defendant served formerly as a army medic with the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, the military regiment for the English northwest, including on tours of Afghanistan.

Wanjiru, twenty-one, a hairdresser who had a baby daughter, vanished after a evening out, and her body was located two months later in the premises of the accommodation where she had previously spotted.

Not a single person had before been taken into custody or charged in connection to her demise. Purkiss’s arrest was the result of a fresh police investigation, which came after a exposé in the year 2021 by the Sunday Times, in which the media outlet reached out to several active and retired troops in the unit.

The probe has been spearheaded by Kenyan detectives, which, under a mutual defense pact, holds legal authority in the legal case.
