Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and stated they should be taken into custody and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Content That Provoked the Controversy
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in defense or defense positions.
"Like us, you all took an oath to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the representatives stated in the short video. "At present, the threats to our constitution don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can refuse improper directives, you can reject unlawful commands, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to carry out directives that violate the law or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction
The video message seemed to provoke a furious response from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives React
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader published a unified statement censuring the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all served our nation with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these extreme social media posts and withdraw his dangerous language before he causes harm," the statement stated.
Officials' Defiant Response
The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a declaration.
"We are veterans and security experts who love this country and took an oath to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No intimidation, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that sacred duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their protection as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "Every American must unite and denounce the former president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."
Additional Governmental Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. All senators, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This constitutes very harmful, you have leading members of Congress instructing soldiers to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in American history."
The Republican leader also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and determine all that."
White House Statement
During a White House press conference on later that day, when asked by a media member, "Is the president want to kill members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the spokesperson stated. "There are active officials of the federal government who conspired to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to disobey the president's proper directives."
She stated: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can cause people getting killed, it can cause chaos, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
