"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a message pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise longs to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. Multiple famous supporters have publicly petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a close gang. Their visuals frequently feature them marching in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to form a group."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Award Nod

The band are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The record came out of a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes follow breakups and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global fan base.

Yet the sister act will forever be their top focus.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
