The movie, though, may align so closely with the mythologized image circulated by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a endorsement instead of a challenge.

The Manufactured Superhero

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a tailor-made persona of the president. This character is a political superhero devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a TV series released last October, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “rescue” the nation from chaos. Although he is called a different name, the message is unmistakable: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. A new film inspired by a popular book sets out to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the focus to the political machinery around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is shown as having been picked by influential figures to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged him to take the job. The presidency was in essence a selection process with many candidates. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the state in practice.

• Per an expert who researched his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.

Interestingly, the shift to framing him as a “spy” may in part have been inspired by the actor's debut as 007. His harder interpretation prompted Russian media and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Mashup posters swapping Craig’s face with his surfaced on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or key figures in the story, even though it includes the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who never appears directly. He is signaled through photographs or calls “from above”. Now, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it perhaps aims to question.
